Your Medicare Drug Benefit: How Walgreens Can Help
Reviewed by Staff of Diabetes Digest

The Medicare Part D prescription insurance program is now off and running. If you qualify for Medicare and haven’t signed up yet for one of the prescription drug plans administering the pharmacy benefit in your area—or if you’re approaching the age of 65 and can soon begin receiving Medicare benefits—it’s worth your while to get on board with Medicare Part D. Depending on which type of Medicare coverage you have, you’ll have to enroll in either a prescription drug plan [PDP] or a more comprehensive health coverage program known as a Medicare Advantage Plan [MA-PD] to get the benefits of Medicare Part D prescription insurance.

By now, you’ve probably heard a lot about some of the confusion many people have experienced in trying to sign up for the Medicare Part D. Did you know that your Walgreens pharmacy can help? Walgreens pharmacists have the tools to help you cut through the confusion and find the prescription drug plan that best meets your needs. Once you’re enrolled in Medicare Part D, bring your card to Walgreens, where you can take advantage of a whole range of services to help you get your medicines quickly, easily and conveniently.

The choice of plans is up to you and your family, but Walgreens can help. Walgreens is the only pharmacy chain with a live, computerized, interactive information system to help you sort through the dozens of plans available in your region. The information system generates a free report that provides you with the information you need to help you make your choice. Building your free Medicare report is easy. If you already use Walgreens to fill your prescriptions and your prescription records are on file, your Walgreens pharmacist can create a personalized profile of the prescription drug plans available to you based on the medicines you fill at Walgreens. You can get your report from any Walgreens location. Based on the medicines you currently use, Walgreens’ system will check each drug plan in your region and provide a detailed report of those plans in alphabetical order, along with copay, premium and deductible information. You can also create your own, free Medicare plan profile on walgreens.com/medicare. Simply click on the link that reads,” Build a free personalized report,” log in with your own password and follow the step-by-step guide to build your report and print it out.

If you aren’t a regular Walgreens prescription customer yet, you can still use the online tool to build your personalized Medicare report from your home computer. Or if you prefer not to use the online report, you can print a prescription medication form on walgreens.com or use the one on the next page. Just write the names of all the medicines you take on the form and bring it to your local Walgreens, where your pharmacist will run your free report.

THE FREE MEDICARE REPORT WILL TELL YOU:

  • all participating Medicare prescription insurance plans available in your area, including their Web addresses and phone numbers.
  • how many of your current prescriptions each plan covers and which classes and price categories they fall into.
  • each plan’s monthly premium.
  • each plan’s deductible.
  • the copays for each class of prescription.

SOME FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT WALGREENS’ FREE MEDICARE REPORT

  1. Is the information I enter to build my profile safe? Yes. All the information you enter at Walgreens.com to create your free Medicare report is protected by our secure system, and none of it is saved.
  2. Is my information still safe if I see a warning about Security Information? Yes. If a message asks if you want to display both secure and non-secure items, your information is safe whether you select Yes or No
  3. What if I can't find one of my prescription medicines? Try both the brand and generic name for the drug. If you still can’t find it, check your prescription label or your Walgreens prescription history for the correct spelling of the medication. If you are still unable to find your medication, it may be missing from our records. Please call customer service at (877) 250-5823 and let us know.
  4. Can I add additional prescription medicines to my report? If you have already created a report, but have left one of your medicines out, you must create a completely new report. Your personal security is the reason: We do not store any of the information you enter when building your plan profile.
  5. How do I remove a medicine from my prescription list? Highlight the medicine you want to remove by clicking the name once, then select REMOVE SELECTED below the large window. The removed medicine will not appear in your report.
  6. How do I print and save my report? Print your report by selecting either the printer icon or File > Print in the upper left corner of the window where the report appears. To save it, select either the floppy disc icon or File > Save As in the upper left corner of the window where the report appears.
