You probably know that fiber is healthy for you in many ways. Recently, a new advantage of eating lots of fiber has been uncovered. A new study shows that eating a lot of fiber may help lower blood pressure.
Researchers took a look at the results of 25 studies on the effects of dietary fiber on blood pressure and found that if people had high blood pressure (hypertension), eating a lot of fiber helped lower it. The amount of fiber taken in the studies ranged from 3.8 grams per day to 125 grams per day. The type of fiber added to the diet in the studies included fruit, cereal, fiber pills, and vegetables.
Nearly 50 million Americans and one billion people worldwide have high blood pressure.Typically, they manage high blood pressure in one or more of the following ways;
- Medications;
- Weight loss;
- Reduced sodium intake;
- Drinking less alcohol;
- Taking more potassium;
- Increasing physical activity.
It turns out that eating more fiber is the only change to your diet proven to help lower high blood pressure. At the same time, though, researchers say that more study is needed to determine what the long-term effects would be of eating so much fiber.
