When it comes to barriers which get in the way of exercise, the winter chill and icy roads (at least in many parts of the country), and fewer hours of daylight are just a few that keep even the most dedicated exerciser’s door shut tight. But, too many aspects of your health and well being are at risk to let your exercise plan come to a screeching halt because it’s cold outside. Here’s how NOT to let the dog days of winter derail your stride:
- Take advantage of days where the weather is tolerable. Get out and be active.
- Consider a change in your exercise pattern. A midday walk or bike ride may work better than your warm weather schedule of early morning or evening.
- Wear enough clothing to be warm and comfortable. Layers of clothing work well. As you warm up, peel down.
- Walk the shopping malls or other enclosed facilities.
- Rent exercise video tapes at your local library or video store. Check out different fitness shows on TV. See which you enjoy and fit into your schedule.
- Opt for swimming in the winter. Find a local indoor pool.
- Search for other indoor activities - aerobics or strength and toning classes.
- While you watch TV walk in place for a while.
