The Future of Diagnosed Cases of Diabetes In an article appearing in the November, 2001 issue of Diabetes Care,
authors projected that the number of Americans with diagnosed diabetes is
projected to increase 165% in 50 years. This increase is based on
a prevalence of 4%, or 11 million cases in 2000 versus a projection of 7.2% or
29 million cases. More than half of the projected increase is attributed to a general
population increase combined with a growing population of seniors, although over
a third of the increase is attributed to increasing prevalence rates. The
researchers noted that the projections may be underestimated, since it is known
that many cases of diabetes are never diagnosed—possibly as many as one-third
of all cases. Researchers said people can reduce their risk by developing better eating
habits and maintaining a regular exercise program. Find out which segments of the population are at the most risk. Read the FULL
